Delnote Constructions at the Olympic Expansion Project
December 1999 - Delnote Construction completes contract at Roxby
Downs
Delnote Constructions was involved with the concrete construction at
the Olympic Dam for the Western Mining Corporation over the last two and
a half years. The contract was initially for a period of three months
and approximately $500,000. However the contract was substantially increased
as work progressed and eventually totaled to $6.7 million dollars. Most
of the contract was related to manual labour with some plant hire and
sundry materials.
This project consisted of the construction of the following:
- Amenity buildings and change rooms.
- Warehouse and storerooms.
- Desalination plant.
- Oil and fuel storage.
- Wheel wash plant.
- Cable pits and paving.
- Laboratories and testing facilities.
- Winder building.
- Large Retaining walls.
- Slimes treatment plant.
- Concrete sprayed walls.
- Concrete shotcreting.
- Concrete ducts, culverts.
- Concrete pumping above and below ground for the railway system.

As you can see in the photo abovet, the area to be concreted was quite
extensive and needed a high level of coordination and quality control.
On the left of the picture are vertical retaining walls varying form heights
of 2.5 meters to 3.5 meters and in thickness of 200mm to 600mm. On the
right the sloping embankments to the tanks had to be formed, reinforced
and sprayed with concrete to 200mm thick and 8 meters high. The finish
to the concrete had to receive a special epoxy coating and therefore the
quality of concrete finish had to be of a good standard.
